Plate calculator

A plate calculator is a loading tool that converts a target total barbell weight into the matching plates for each side. It performs a calculation; it is not a type of plate or other resistance equipment. A useful calculator accounts for the bar, any collars included in the logged total, paired loading, and the plate sizes actually available.

The basic calculation is: subtract the bar weight and the total collar weight from the target, then divide the remainder by two. The result is the plate load required on each sleeve. For example, a 100 kg target with a 20 kg bar and no collars included leaves 80 kg in plates, or 40 kg per side. One valid side could be 20 kg + 15 kg + 5 kg, loaded in the same pairs on both ends.

The target must follow the same convention used in the training log. Some lifters record the full system weight, while cable stacks and some machines use only a setting. Specialty bars vary, and the effective starting resistance of a Smith machine may not equal the visible bar and plates. Kilograms and pounds must not be mixed. If the remaining load cannot be built from paired available weights, the exact target is not loadable.

Load the largest plates first unless equipment instructions require otherwise, use matching plates on both sides, secure them with collars, and verify the total before lifting. A calculator cannot detect a mislabeled bar, missing inventory, arithmetic entered in the wrong unit, or unsafe loading. Microloading expands the possible combinations only when suitable fractional plates are present.

If the exact target cannot be assembled, it can show the next lower achievable weight. The result is only as accurate as the entered target and the configured bar and plate inventory.
