One of Alpha Progression's closest competitors

Gravl is unusually similar to Alpha Progression in its basic promise.

Both apps try to remove two major sources of uncertainty from strength training:

Both generate workouts around the individual rather than handing every user the same generic routine. Both prefill sets, repetitions, and weights. Both learn from logged performance, account for real equipment, and provide exercise substitutions when the original movement is unavailable.

That makes this comparison much closer than comparing Alpha Progression with a conventional workout tracker.

The differences lie mainly in the time horizon and surrounding product features. Gravl is particularly strong at adapting the upcoming workout or training week. Alpha Progression puts more emphasis on building a coherent program and deliberately developing it across a longer training cycle.

The fundamental difference: program-first vs. week-first

Alpha Progression begins with the training program.

Its generator creates a structured plan around your goal, experience, schedule, workout duration, equipment, and muscle priorities. Once the plan is created, its core structure remains stable while your performance targets and periodized variables develop over time.

Gravl can also provide stable training, but its default product philosophy is somewhat more adaptive. It tracks recovery, considers recent workouts, and generates upcoming sessions around the current week. Gravl only displays one week at a time because the following week partly depends on what you log during the current one.

Neither approach is inherently better for every user.

A program-first approach provides a clear long-term structure and makes it easy to understand how the current workout fits into the wider training cycle. A week-first approach can adapt more naturally when your schedule and recovery change from one week to the next.

If your schedule is irregular and you often need the app to reconstruct the next session around recovery, time, and recent activity, Gravl's adaptability is a real advantage. If you normally follow a predictable training schedule, the greater stability and longer-term visibility of Alpha Progression may be more useful.

Personalized workout generation

Both apps use substantial personal information when creating training.

In Gravl, you can select up to two focused muscle groups. Gravl prioritizes them by placing their exercises earlier in relevant workouts, when you are less fatigued.

That is useful, but Gravl explicitly explains that selecting a focused muscle does not increase its training frequency. It also may not increase the number of exercises assigned to that muscle. Depending on workout duration, the same amount of work may simply appear earlier in the session.

You can also exclude up to four muscle groups entirely.

Alpha Progression treats muscle priorities more broadly as an input to the generated training plan. They can influence how exercises and training volume are distributed within the constraints of your schedule, equipment, and workout duration.

This is particularly important for hypertrophy-focused users. Prioritizing lateral delts, biceps, or upper chest often means more than simply performing those exercises first. It can affect exercise selection, weekly volume, and how limited training time is allocated across the program.

Gravl's Focus feature primarily changes when a muscle is trained within relevant workouts. Alpha Progression's muscle priorities play a broader role in determining how the generated program is constructed.

Progressive Overload: both apps are genuinely advanced

This is one of the closest parts of the comparison.

Gravl estimates strength from your logged performance and recommends weights and repetitions for future workouts. Its current system can increase repetitions through a rep ladder and then raise the weight when appropriate, using the plates, dumbbells, or machine stack actually available to you.

Recommendations can also account for:

  • Your recent performance
  • Your estimated one-rep max
  • Your Exertion Rating
  • The exercise's position within the workout
  • The equipment available in the current gym

Gravl even provides a "Why this weight today?" explanation that shows how it arrived at a recommendation.

The targets are calibrated to your actual performance rather than a generic profile, and the calculation can use the weight increments available in your gym.

There is no honest reason to pretend that Gravl merely remembers what you lifted while Alpha Progression alone provides real progression. Both systems provide meaningful, personalized weight-and-repetition guidance.

Handling awkward weight jumps

Both apps understand that the mathematically ideal next load often does not exist.

Suppose you use 20 kg dumbbells and the next pair weighs 22.5 kg. Moving to the next weight represents a 12.5% increase, which may be much larger than the improvement you are ready for.

A useful progression system needs to combine changes in repetitions and weight rather than blindly increasing the load.

Both Alpha Progression and Gravl can do this.

Gravl also keeps separate performance data for machines at different gyms. This is sensible because two cable stacks displaying the same number can feel very different. Free-weight performance remains shared because 100 kg on a barbell is the same external load wherever you train.

RIR vs. Gravl's Exertion Rating

Alpha Progression supports RIR, or Reps in Reserve. RIR estimates how many additional clean repetitions you could have completed before reaching failure.

You can track RIR and use RIR targets within a periodized plan, but it is optional. Alpha Progression's weight-and-repetition recommendations work whether you use RIR or not.

Gravl uses a simpler Exertion Rating. After an exercise, you can indicate how much more you could have done using one of three values. Gravl can then use this feedback to fine-tune the next recommendation.

Exertion Rating is enabled by default but can be disabled.

Gravl does not currently publish an equally clear total number of exercise entries across its official product pages. It advertises more than 300 trainer-led exercise videos and says that every exercise has a how-to video.

Alpha Progression's exercise evaluations

Alpha Progression adds a separate hypertrophy-oriented layer. Exercises can be evaluated based on factors such as:

For users who want a large, clearly defined gym database with specific hypertrophy evaluations, Alpha Progression has the stronger proposition.

Custom exercises: Gravl has a sophisticated implementation

Both apps let users create custom exercises, but Gravl goes further in how they can be added.

A custom movement can be created by:

  • Importing a YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok video
  • Entering the exercise name and letting AI complete the details
  • Entering all information manually

Users can assign muscles, equipment, exercise type, importance, and related exercises. A custom exercise can also be allowed to appear in AI-generated workouts.

If you provide a starting 1RM, Gravl can generate more accurate progression immediately. Otherwise, it begins conservatively and learns from the first performances.

Alpha Progression supports custom exercises and custom images, but custom movements are not selected by the plan generator because the app does not have the same complete underlying information and quality control as it has for built-in exercises.

External activities can also contribute. Gravl connects with Apple Health and Health Connect, detects activities such as running, cycling, or swimming, and lets you import them. You then rate how hard the activity was so the app can estimate its recovery impact.

This creates a more complete view for users whose physical activity extends beyond lifting.

Alpha Progression does not use an equivalent per-muscle recovery percentage. It manages recovery primarily through the structure of the program: split, frequency, exercise selection, volume, periodization, and deloads.

The practical value of Gravl's approach depends on the user.

If you train on changing days and mix several sports, recovery-driven generation can be highly useful. If you follow a stable weekly split and your other activity is predictable, the program itself already handles much of the recovery planning.

Training around injuries

Gravl has a dedicated injury-aware workout feature.

Rather than simply excluding an entire muscle, you tell the app which movement patterns hurt. For example, a shoulder may hurt during overhead pressing but feel fine during lateral raises. A lower-back issue may make hinging uncomfortable without preventing every back exercise.

Gravl can then exclude exercises associated with the reported movement patterns. In fixed workouts, it attempts to substitute an exercise that trains the same muscle without using the painful pattern.

The feature is not a medical diagnosis or rehabilitation tool, and Gravl explicitly says that persistent or concerning pain should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
