EZ bar

EZ bar

An EZ bar is a usually short barbell with bends in the shaft that create several angled grip positions. In German it is commonly called an SZ-Stange. The implement can be plate-loaded or have a fixed total weight, and it is used mainly for exercises in which a straight bar's hand position feels restrictive.

Common applications include biceps curls, reverse curls, lying or overhead triceps extensions, and some rows or presses. The angled sections let the hands use semi-supinated or semi-pronated positions instead of one fully straight alignment. Depending on the exercise and person, this may feel more comfortable at the wrists, elbows, or forearms.

Comfort is individual. The bends do not guarantee protection from pain or injury, and one grip angle is not appropriate for every movement. Hand placement also changes which section of the bar carries the load and can make the bar tilt if the grip is not symmetrical. Test a light load and controlled form before deciding that the shape suits the exercise.

An EZ bar is a type of free weight, but it is not a universal substitute for a straight barbell or dumbbells. The connected hands still move together, while dumbbells allow independent paths. A straight bar may be required by a sport or exercise standard; an EZ bar may be preferable when its grip is more practical for accessory work.

Empty-bar mass, shaft length, sleeve diameter, and load rating are not standardized. Confirm whether the bar accepts standard or Olympic plates, include its actual mass in the logged load, and use compatible collars. The bar's shape is a grip option, not evidence that the exercise is automatically safer or more effective.
