Calorie cycling is a meal-planning approach that intentionally varies calorie intake between days while aiming for a chosen average over the week or another defined period. A person might eat more on demanding training days and less on rest days, or alternate deficit days with days near maintenance.
The label describes energy distribution, not which foods or macronutrients are eaten. It overlaps with some forms of intermittent energy restriction, but it is not the same as intermittent fasting, which defines fasting and eating periods. A refeed is usually a short, carbohydrate-focused higher-intake period within a cut, while a diet break commonly stays around maintenance for several consecutive days or weeks.
For body-weight change, the average energy balance over time remains central. Moving 400 calories from a rest day to a training day does not create a new weekly deficit if the total stays the same. It may nevertheless improve training fuel, hunger management, social flexibility, or adherence for some people. For others, changing targets makes shopping, meal planning, and interpretation of daily scale weight more difficult.
Calorie cycling is sometimes marketed as "metabolic confusion," implying that variable intake prevents the body from adapting. Human evidence does not establish that daily variation has a unique fat-loss effect. In a systematic review of intermittent diets with break periods, body-composition outcomes were similar to continuous restriction overall, although resting metabolic rate declined slightly less in the intermittent groups. Those protocols differed and should not all be treated as proof for any zig-zag schedule.
A useful plan sets the weekly average first, then distributes energy in a way that can be followed without extreme low days or compensatory overeating. Performance, hunger, recovery, and the multi-week trend are more informative than whether each day hits an identical number.
