Phytochemicals, also called secondary plant compounds, are substances that plants produce for functions such as color, aroma, defense, or signaling. Unlike carbohydrate, fat, and protein, they are not a single nutrient class, and unlike essential vitamins or minerals, they generally have no defined deficiency disease or intake requirement.
The category includes thousands of compounds. Common groups include polyphenols, carotenoids, glucosinolates, phytosterols, and sulfur-containing compounds. Their metabolism and biological effects differ, so "contains phytochemicals" is not one measurable health property. A compound's amount can also change with plant variety, ripeness, storage, processing, and cooking, while absorption depends on the food matrix and the rest of the meal.
Fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, tea, coffee, and cocoa all contribute different mixtures. Eating a varied range of plant foods is a more defensible strategy than chasing one fashionable antioxidant. The German Nutrition Society's food-based guidance likewise emphasizes diverse plant foods, legumes, nuts, and whole grains within the whole dietary pattern. Fibre, essential nutrients, and the replacement of less nutritious options may explain part of the health association; it cannot automatically be assigned to one isolated phytochemical.
In strength training, phytochemicals have no established dose that directly causes muscle growth or replaces adequate energy, protein, sleep, and training. Concentrated extracts can deliver amounts far beyond those found in food and may interact with medication or have different effects from the original plant. More is therefore not necessarily better. A colorful and varied food pattern is a practical goal, whereas supplement claims about detoxification, hormone optimization, or eliminating exercise-induced oxidative stress require evidence for the specific ingredient, dose, and outcome.
