Dietary fat

Dietary fat is a macronutrient found in food, mainly as triglycerides made from fatty acids and glycerol. It supplies concentrated energy, essential fatty acids, and structural components for cells, and it supports the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Dietary fat is not the same thing as body-fat tissue.

Fat provides about 9 kilocalories per gram, more than carbohydrate or protein, according to the DGE/ÖGE energy factors. This energy density can make portions matter when total intake is a goal, but it does not make fat inherently "fattening." Changes in stored body fat reflect energy balance and metabolism over time, not the direct conversion of every gram of dietary fat into one gram of body tissue.

Fatty acids are commonly grouped as saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and trans. The type and food source matter alongside the total amount. Some polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential because the body cannot synthesize them in sufficient amounts; omega-3 fatty acids are one relevant family. Nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, avocados, fish, eggs, dairy, meat, and many prepared foods provide different mixtures rather than a single isolated type.

Adequate fat intake helps cover essential fatty acids and absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Very high intake can crowd out protein, carbohydrate, fiber, or micronutrient-rich foods within a fixed calorie budget, while an unnecessarily severe restriction can make essential-fat and vitamin coverage harder. The EFSA dietary reference value framework treats total fat and individual fatty-acid categories separately for this reason.

During exercise, the body can oxidize fatty acids and intramuscular triglycerides, particularly at lower and moderate intensities. This does not mean that eating fat immediately before training automatically increases body-fat loss, nor that higher acute fat burning guarantees more fat loss over weeks. High-fat meals close to training may also digest slowly or feel uncomfortable for some people.

For strength trainees, dietary fat should be judged as part of the whole diet: enough to support essential functions and food enjoyment, with attention to source quality, while leaving room for protein and carbohydrate appropriate to the goal. There is no universally superior low-fat or high-fat ratio.
