A deload is a planned, temporary reduction in training stress intended to reduce accumulated fatigue, support recovery, or prepare for the next phase of training. It usually retains some training but changes one or more variables such as set volume, load, effort, frequency, or exercise selection.
Despite the common name "deload week," a deload does not have to last exactly seven days. It can be scheduled proactively after a demanding block or introduced reactively when fatigue and performance trends suggest that the current workload is no longer being tolerated well. The appropriate reduction depends on what created the fatigue. Cutting sets may be more direct when volume is high; using lighter loads can reduce joint and skill demands; staying farther from muscle failure can lower set effort.
A Delphi consensus on deloading in strength and physique sports defines the practice as a period of reduced training stress and reports that volume, intensity of effort, and load are common adjustment targets. This is expert consensus rather than proof that one deload design produces superior long-term results. Evidence does not establish a universal schedule or percentage reduction for every lifter.
A deload is distinct from a rest day, which removes a scheduled training session, and from active recovery, which is deliberately light activity. It also differs from detraining: a brief, planned reduction normally aims to preserve the program and practice, whereas detraining describes losses after the stimulus becomes insufficient for long enough. A deload can include one or more full rest days, but complete rest is not part of the definition.
Deloads are one tool in fatigue management, not a required ritual or a cure for every stalled lift. Technique changes, unrealistic progression, illness, low energy intake, poor sleep, and program design can also reduce performance. After the deload, compare several sessions rather than expecting every source of fatigue to disappear on a particular morning. If the same problem quickly returns, the normal training dose or recovery context may need review.
