Also known as: Workout tracker, Workout log app

A gym tracker, also called a workout tracker or workout log app, is software for recording strength-training sessions and retrieving those records later. A useful tracker stores at least the exercise, load, repetitions, and number of sets, then organizes the data by date and exercise. This turns an individual session into a searchable workout history rather than a collection of numbers that disappears when the workout ends.

The tracker is the tool; a training diary is the record and logging practice it supports. Likewise, a tracker does not automatically provide a training plan. Some apps only record a plan the user already has, whereas others can also create plans, recommend progression, or analyze trends. Keeping these functions separate makes app comparisons more meaningful: fast logging and reliable data matter even when no automated coaching feature is used.

For strength training, practical features include rapid entry of sets, access to the previous performance for the same exercise, personal-record detection, an adjustable rest timer, support for preferred units, and notes for context. Exercise substitutions, unilateral sets, bodyweight exercises, warm-up sets, and custom exercises should be represented without distorting the data. Export and synchronization options also matter because a long training history becomes more valuable over time.

Good data quality is more important than collecting every possible metric. The same load can represent different performances if technique, range of motion, equipment, or assistance changes. A short note such as "different cable stack" or "paused reps" can prevent a false comparison. Conversely, recording only total tonnage can hide whether progress came from more repetitions, heavier loads, extra sets, or simply a different exercise setup.

Trackers support progress tracking, but they do not prove that every increase is a training adaptation. Day-to-day performance also varies with fatigue, sleep, exercise order, and normal measurement error. Trends across several comparable sessions are usually more informative than one unusually good or bad workout.

Alpha Progression provides unlimited workout logging in its permanent, ad-free free version. No account is required for local use. The free tier also includes manually created training plans, manually created standalone workouts, all 795 built-in exercises and real demonstration videos, body measurements, a rest timer, personal records, achievements, plan and workout sharing, and CSV export.

During a workout, the logger shows the planned target, previous sets and notes, and a selectable performance metric such as estimated 1RM, estimated 10RM, or volume. Weight and repetitions can be entered through a picker that combines likely values with a keyboard; Pro users can also enter optional RIR. Notes can remain specific to one workout or be pinned so they appear whenever the exercise is performed. Workouts can be logged offline and synchronized later when the user is signed in.

Alpha Progression Pro adds the plan and standalone-workout generators, set-specific progression recommendations, charts, multiple gyms, RIR, periodization and deloads, the warm-up and plate calculators, exercise evaluations, and images for custom exercises. The gym-tracker comparison guide explains which criteria are useful when evaluating this category.
