Custom exercise
A custom exercise is a user-created exercise record in a workout tracker. It represents a movement or equipment setup that is not available as a suitable entry in the tracker’s built-in exercise database. Once created, it can be selected and logged like another exercise, preserving the associated workout data under a consistent name.
Custom entries are useful for a newly installed machine, a coach-prescribed variation, a rehabilitation movement, an unusual grip or attachment, or a movement specific to a home-gym setup. Before creating one, search for an existing exercise and consider whether an exercise substitution already describes the intended movement. Duplicate names split the history and make later comparisons harder.
Use a precise, durable name that identifies the distinction that matters, such as the implement, side, grip, or machine model. Avoid including temporary details such as today’s weight in the name. If the tracker permits notes or media, record enough setup information to repeat the movement: seat height, attachment, range of motion, and other variables that materially affect performance. Consistent naming is part of good exercise selection because it keeps comparable sets in the same history.
A custom exercise may not receive every benefit of a curated built-in entry. It can lack a standardized demonstration, technique instructions, common-error guidance, an exercise evaluation, or automatic inclusion in generated programming. The user is responsible for deciding whether the movement and its execution are appropriate. For a new or rehabilitation exercise, instructions from a qualified professional may be more relevant than a user-created label in an app.
In Alpha Progression, a custom exercise can be created from scratch or copied from an existing exercise as a starting point. Its configurable fields include the name, equipment, main target muscle, multiple auxiliary muscles, exercise type, tracked metrics, and the percentage of bodyweight involved. Alpha Progression Pro additionally allows a custom image from the photo library or camera, or the image of an existing exercise, to be attached to the entry.
Custom exercises can be added manually to plans and standalone workouts and remain visible in the exercise database regardless of the active gym’s equipment filter. They are not selected automatically by the plan or workout generator. This lets the gym tracker represent personal equipment and unusual movements without inserting undocumented user-created exercises into automated programming.
